Is it just me or is anyone else sick of all the pharmaceutical ads on the TV lately? You can’t even sit and enjoy the misery and destruction on the evening news without seeing 3 different pharmaceutical ads during each commercial break. Viagra, Cialis, Boniva, Lunesta, Celebrex, Vesicare…the list goes on and on like a meth head’s rap sheet. I find it annoying as well as unjustified. Why do these huge pharmaceutical companies need to advertise to the general public? Wouldn’t it be better to advertise to the doctor’s since most of these drugs are prescription only? It’s not like I can go down to the local CVS and grab a box of Viagra when the mood is feeling right!
I understand that advertising prescription drugs to the general public helps to educate us as to what medications are available out there but it also has to hurt the medical profession by creating a large section of hypochondriacs that now go to their doctors convinced that they have high cholesterol or restless leg syndrome! Sure, that could bring a problem to light that needs addressed but it can also be easy to misdiagnose some of these ailments causing you to start taking unneeded medications risking health concerns and interactions with other meds that you are already taking. Have you listened to the disclaimers at the end of each commercial? “This medication may cause nose bleed, high blood pressure, low sex drive, dry skin, diarrhea or vaginal discharge. Do not use if you are pregnant, nursing, allergic to chocolate or have a history of anal sex. Some test subjects have had heart attacks and died while using this drug but it is unsure if it caused the deaths.” Just an example that I paraphrased, but damn, seems like some of the risks may out weigh

I seriously think that the drug companies should advertise to the doctors and health care professionals and they should be the ones that tell us what we need to heal our health issues. Plus, I am really sick of seeing this crap advertised on TV! It’s pretty bad when your 7 year old kid thinks he needs to go to the ER because he has had an erection lasting over 4 hours. “Where did you hear that?” “The TV told me, Daddy!” Well, as impressionable as kids are, you can bet adults do go to the doctor requesting prescriptions for shit that they don’t even need! If one doctor won’t prescribe it, there are hundreds of others that might! There you go, good business for the drug companies but a bad deal for the consumers who are getting duped into paying for medications that they probably don’t need, not to mention the possible heath risks associated with some of these meds. Does the FDA even have time to thoroughly test all the new pharmaceuticals coming out lately? Recalls and discontinuing meds due to health risks seem to be fairly common these days too! I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be the guinea pig that they test on! I just want to live my life LIKE A MOFO…with as little medication as I need and even less jammed down my throat from TV advertisements!
